Muslim Fashion from Around the World

As the entire world knows by now, modern Muslim fashion is taking the world by storm. With more and more articles every day describing the break in the fashion industry for modest womenswear, it’s no surprise that we are seeing a growing number of women bring Muslim clothing to the high street.

Muslim attire is not just set to certain staple pieces either, the globe is being taken over by fashion conscious women who are taking modest Muslim garb to a whole new level.

Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is a country surprisingly obsessed with fashion and under their abaya women usually wear western dress. Men and women alike love to dress up and Muslim womens clothing is at the top of its game here with several fantastic fashion designers emerging within the last few years. Islamic clothes here are both modest and fiercely fashionable, take for example the designer Hatem Alakeel who makes modest yet masculine influenced Islamic womens clothing for work.

UK

Due to the diversity of the UK, Muslim fashion here is a never-ending well of beautiful, modest clothing. From casual Muslim dresses to traditional Islamic clothing, the streets are covered with gorgeous ideas for how to wear modest clothing. Fashion bloggers are rife in the UK and there is a lot of Islamic women’s clothing available online. One woman to watch is famous blogger Hana Tajima who took the UK by storm and has since started running her own business with a line at retailer UNIQLO. Her personal taste is a more casual modest look that suits most British girls for everyday wear.

Pakistan

This year’s Pakistan fashion week showed us a game changer in the country’s position on the world’s fashion map. Pakistani Muslim clothes came in all shapes and sizes this season, with bold colors and stunning silhouettes being the main take away from the Spring/Summer 2017 collections. Although there are a lot of modern pieces to be taken away from Pakistan at the moment, some of the most beautiful designs came in the form of traditional clothing that would still be worn on a day to day basis.

USA

It’s no secret that the majority of Muslim fashion bloggers and designers these days are based in the US. With the sheer amount of inspiration here it’s difficult to find the Muslim trends that are running through the veins of America. However, one woman whose name most young Muslims know is Saufeeya Goodson. The New York based fashion blogger is the epitome of chic, combining killer heels and amazing Hijab fashion with long coats and accessories galore.

Dubai

Dubai is an epicenter of fashion, with some of the most gorgeous Muslim looks flooding the streets every day. Although some of the brands may come with a hefty price tag, their street fashion is some of the most inspiring in the world for young Muslim women. Boasting the largest shoe store in the world, it’s no wonder that in Dubai they look to dress up. The usual look for day or night is some killer heels and a great bag, accompanied by some seriously cool, modest outfits.

Abaya: The Muslim Maxi Dress

A good Abaya can be your best friend, especially in the heat of the summer sun. However the Abaya fulfills many other purposes than being just a staple fashion piece.

Although Abayas come in an array of different colors and are available around the world, original abayas were all black Abayas, and in the Emirates and Saudi Arabia, they are mostly still black in color. The Abaya was originally a one piece garment that allowed the wearer to maintain complete modesty and respect for their body, however it also served a different purpose. Among communities, the uniformity of the Abaya allowed for class division to be ignored. With all women wearing the same style of clothes, there was very little to differentiate rich from poor; bringing more people together through their shared faith rather than driving them apart with hierarchy.

Nowadays, and especially in Western countries, the Abaya dress is a fashion symbol that blends culture and religion across many spaces. The Abaya and Jilbab (traditionally covering the head and hands also) are comfortable, breathable and fashionable, making for excellent summer wear and so many different styles means you can find one that’s perfect for any occasion.

Here are some of our stylish Abayas for sale now!

Ramadan Traditions Around the World

Ramadan is a month long holy period celebrated by over 1.2 billion Muslims around the world. The focus of the month is on the Qur’an and on fasting where Muslims do not drink food or water from sunrise to sunset. In addition to religious activities, during this time, Muslims also try to improve themselves, their families, communities, and environments. The end of Ramadan is celebrated with the Eid holiday where Muslims exchange  Eid gifts and spend time with family. One of the most popular gifts that Muslims give during Ramadan to their family and themselves is new Eid clothes. Some Muslims use Ramadan as an opportunity to reset their whole wardrobe with a variety of new Ramadan and Eid outfits! Muslim traditions are diverse and vary around the world. In some places traditions continue while others are making their own new traditions.

Ramadan in the USA
In the USA the Muslim community is culturally and ethnically diverse and you will find a variety of Ramadan and Eid festivities just as diverse as they are. During the month of Ramadan you will find that Muslims try a little harder to be kind, generous, and avoid bad habits or indulgences. Many Muslims volunteer or donate money, food, and clothing to charity organizations during Ramadan. Muslims in Michigan work in a charity organization packing boxes for a charity organization. After working hard all month, Muslims often celebrate at charity events and galas wearing festive Eid dresses.

Ramadan in France
In France, the abundance of local independent markets and fresh produce makes shopping for Ramadan Iftar dinners a daily delight. French Muslims have wide variety of choices when it comes to preparing delicious and nutritious Ramadan cuisine.

Ramadan in Indonesia
In Indonesia Muslims hit the beach! On the island of Java in Indonesia, Muslims prepare for a Padusan ritual by bathing in the Parangtritis beach in Rogyakarta Indonesia. They are definitely not wearing their new Ramadan clothes for this!

Ramadan in Pakistan
In Pakistan, special Ramadan breakfast foods are served in local bazaars including rose water drinks and deep fried pooris that give the energy to fast through the day.

Ramadan in Egypt
The Fanous of Ramadan is a Egyptian tradition where the street of Egypt are lit with beautiful lanterns. In Egyptian folklore, it is said a Caliph was welcomed to Egypt by the lighting of hundreds of lanterns. Many tourists who visit Egypt purchase lanterns as a unique and historically relevant Islamic gift for Ramadan. A artisan made lantern is a unique and inspiring Eid gift.

Singapore
A Ramadan special at a restaurant in Singapore. Muslims put on their comfortable Ramadan dresses and go out for the evening. Some wear ethnic dress while others opt for a more western style. These women might be talking about unique Eid gifts to buy for their friends and family.

Have you considered buying new clothes for Ramadan? Gift giving is a holiday tradition. Practical gifts like clothing are favored, unique gifts that fit into their busy lives but still reflect their artistic and cultural heritage. Artizara is a great resource for cool Ramadan and Eid gifts for today’s busy Muslims

3 Key 2017 Style Trends and How to Wear in Modest Fashion

2017 is the year that Islamic fashion and hijab wearing models really made waves in the mainstream fashion world.

From Kanye West casting hijab-wearing Somali-American model Halima Aden to make her runway debut at New York Fashion Week, to Cover Girl naming Muslim fashion guru and blogger Nura Afia their newest ambassador, to Indonesian fashion designer Anniesa Hasibuan proudly declaring “I’m here bringing the beautiful voice of the Muslim women, the peace and the universal values that fashion can offer”,  2017 has indeed started off to be a landmark year for Islamic fashion.

One thing all the fashionistas above demonstrated loud and clear: Modest fashion doesn’t mean boring. In fact Islamic clothing can be just the opposite. 2017 brings more choices than ever in modest Islamic fashion. Here are some key trends that we picked out that are super easy to adopt whether you’re hijab wearing Mulsimah or love modest dressing and modest clothing in general.

UTILITARIANISM

utilitarianism

Boxy shapes, loose silhouettes and oversize cargo pockets these workwear inspired trends have been around for a while but 2017 saw designers from A.L.C. to Isabel Marant making it a point to give everyday pieces a military- and workwear-inspired vibe.
Utilitarian pieces, by definition simple, not too revealing, meant for everyday wear; are perfect as key pieces of a modest or Islamic clothing wardrobe. Here are a couple of our favorite utilitarian pieces from Artizara:

To make utilitarian chic dressing work, remember to balance oversized proportions with tailored pieces and feminine silhouettes and materials that you can tuck in or layer smoothly.

All Girls Deserve a Chance to Play : Modest Activewear, Anyone?

All girls deserve a chance to play.

But for the active Muslim (or modest) girl participating in sports and other athletic activities, life can be challenging. Sometimes it’s not so much a matter of choice but having the right gear like modest sportswear, that lets her be active and modest at the same time.

I’ve always wondered why activewear has become synonymous with revealing, tight and uncomfortable.

When my girls were in school, they wanted to participate in the swim team but couldn’t, unless they wore skimpy bathing suits that put their bodies out on full display. They were good swimmers but sadly, were forced to make a choice to forgo the swim team.

Is participating in sports and being fit about being healthy and competitive, or is it about having a certain body shape and showing off your hard-earned body to the world?

During the twenty first century, a consensus has emerged within the scientific and medical community that a sedentary lifestyle coupled with a rich and excessive diet leads to all kinds of health problems, both physical and emotional. This realization has spurred an explosion of new diets, food fads, exercise regimens, magic pills and potions etc. When all those things fail, people sometimes even resort to surgery in the quest of a healthier (or more “ideal”) body.

What does Islam have to say about health and fitness, you ask?

Interestingly, what the modern scientific and medical community figured out in the 21st century, Islam has been advocating since the 7th.

Muslims believe that our bodies, complex and wondrous, and are a trust given to us by God. Just as you would take good care of something precious you were keeping safe for someone, our bodies need to be cared for and maintained, not neglected or abused.

Islam advocates moderation in all things; indeed the the Quran says in verse 2:143:
“Thus We have appointed you a middle nation”.

This moderation applies to all aspects of our lives, even to diet and exercise. The Prophet Muhammed emphasized a simple diet combined with physical exercise. Three of the five foundational pillars of Islam directly involve and/ or impact health and fitness:

  1. The mandatory daily five prayers are a form of exercise, their movements involve all the muscles and joints of the body. Plus the mindfulness and connection with Allah during prayer is great for relieving stress.
  2. Fasting during the month of Ramadan helps us not only to appreciate the plight of those who go hungry, but also trains our bodies to recognize that it is possible (and desirable) to eat less.
  3. Hajj (or pilgrimage to Mecca) is a communal spiritual and physical activity, that needs many days of hard physical effort.

Aisha, Prophet Muhammad’s beloved wife, mentions their love of games and sports in a tradition. She said:
‘I raced with the Prophet and I beat him. Later when I had put on some weight, we raced again and he won. Then he said, ‘this cancels that (referring to the previous race).’

Muslim women are active in all spheres of life these days, and sports are no exception. Team Artizara realized that there was a great need for modest activewear. To help women be modest and active at the same time, Artizara introduced a range of stylishly modest workout clothes.
