London Modest fashion week is here to stay

“In five years this will be the norm” says Fashion designer Roda Abdi after this years London Modest fashion week.

For years, modest and fashion were not two words that could be strung together in a sentence, with many Muslim women having to endure drab, baggy cardigans and one tone headscarfs. Gone are those days, and with the dawn of the internet (especially instagram and pinterest) we now have thousands of modest, comfortable and fashionable ideas at the tip of our fingers.

This was more than evident at Modern Fashion week.

Hundreds of Muslim women turned out for the event, documenting the entire thing on their smartphones and taking note of all the years newest trends. Most notably, with other fashion shows such as Milan and London parading a lot of very strange looks, the MFW seemed to host an array of outfits that normal women would actually wear! Looks without plunging necklines, tiny hemlines and strange cuts and splits littered the catwalk, all available and suitable for anyone wanting their faith and fashion to go hand in hand.

Over 40 Muslim designers from all over the world took part in the fashion week, and one fashion blogger in particular was especially impressed. Dina Tokio, the hijabi blogger who has over a million followers on instagram said “I feel like brands are coming on board with diversity now and I think that it’s down to social media and how much talent there is out there.” Talking about her own success as a blogger she also stated “I want to show that you can coincide faith with fashion and that there are Muslim women who actually represent that.”

The show featured maxi dresses, jumpsuits and headscarves along with some more traditional inspired pieces and some fairy tale, red carpet style dresses that would be fit for any princess.

Tickets were being sold for around $100 and the show is set to now become a staple piece of the city’s fashion calendar.

It seems like the future is set to embrace modest fashion, with it being one of the fastest growing markets in the world, and we here at Artizara can’t wait to see what happens.

Boho Chic

Staying cool in the city can be a challenge, especially if you live somewhere particularly busy. The last thing you want is to be caught out of style, which is why we recommend the stylish, denim Bea tunic. With Moroccan inspired braid work, the material is 100% breathable cotton, making this loose top perfect for wandering around town or catching up with friends on hot days. Pair with a light colored scarf and jeans for a flawless, fabulous, effortless look.

Lazy Days

Some summer days are best spent in the garden, walking around the park or just relaxing listening to music. On these occasions, it’s best not to go overboard, so the Leena is the one for you. A playful, feminine, pleated tunic that comes in a range of pale colors so you can coordinate with your favorite jeans or shoes on a calm day made just for you. A touch of lace make this piece dressy enough for you to throw on in case of last minute plans. Modest and comfortable, the Leena is one of our favorite pieces this summer.IMG_0165

Back to Reality

Although the summer is a glorious season, it isn’t all fun and games. Some of us gals have to work, but there is no reason to sweat out the season in the name of style. It doesn’t all have to be doom and gloom however, with our gorgeous and sophisticated Darya tunic. Perfect for social occasions, family gatherings or splashing a bit of color into the office, you’ll be turning heads this summer in this elegant, Persian inspired tunic. Made with a soft chiffon, the question on everybody’s lips will be ‘how does she stay so cool while looking so good?’. Pair with heels and a matching scarf for extra sophistication.

Halima Aden graces Vogue as it’s first Hijab Fashion cover model!

“All eyes on Halima Aden: The runway star shattering stereotypes,” was the tagline that Vogue Arabia chose to accompany the gorgeous model from St Cloud, Minnesota, welcoming her to the long line of beauties who have graced the magazines cover. This groundbreaking cover, featuring Aden in a full Hijab, is the first of it’s kind, heralding in a new age of diversity in fashion.

Aden came to America at the age of 6 after being born in a refugee camp in Kenya. She became famous after making waves during the Miss Minnesota 2016 beauty pageant, where she was the first contestant in the pageant’s history to wear a hijab, and then a burkini during the swimsuit segment of the competition. She was later signed by IMG models and has since become the first ever hijab wearing model to walk international runways as part of a major agency. So far she has walked the catwalk at Milan fashion week, London modest fashion week and will act as a preliminary judge at this years Miss USA 2017 pageant.

Aden went on to gush about the cover shoot on her instagram, saying ‘that surreal and dreamlike feeling the moment you see yourself on the cover of @voguearabia cannot be explained! I’m beyond appreciative for the opportunity to grace the June cover!’

Now it seems like the sky’s the limit for the 19 year old, who then later in July became the first hijab wearing model on the front cover of Allure magazine.

Accompanied by the caption ‘Muslim. Model. Destroyer of Stereotypes.’ the young beauty is opening the gates for millions of young Muslim women wanting to make it in the fashion industry.

As a pioneer in the modest fashion world, founded in 2002 even before “modest fashion” was a phrase, we at Artizara have a lot to celebrate in Halima’s success. Hopefully this will only be the first of many beautiful Muslim women emerging into the ever changing and accomodating world of fashion. Congratulations Halima!
